Goals

My name is Greg Pool, and as a haole now living in my native California, I want to use my experience having been an earth scientist to share in the exploration of the natural world through playing a tabletop game.

After a decade as an earth scientist in Italy, Mexico, and Hawai’i, I began teaching K-12 science and technology classes. I returned to teach in higher education, where I eventually accepted various technology and marketing positions (LinkedIn profile).

My formative years, however, were on the Big Island of Hawai’i, working for the U.S. Geological Survey at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (1991) and then fighting wildland fire for the Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park (1992) before teaching middle school science and technology classes in Hilo (1993).

Play

In 2003, I started playing tabletop games again for the first time since my childhood, and I’ve been supporting Board Game Geek since 2004 as HaoleBoy.

I’m also profoundly informed by the work of Dr. Stuart Brown through his National Institute for Play and 2010 book, “Play: how it shapes the brain, opens the imagination, and invigorates the soul.” View his 2009 TED talk for more insights.
